Dr Damian Markham-Smith
BEng (Hons) CEng MCIBSE MIMechE LCEA

Damian has a strong understanding of computational modelling having undertaken a PhD in computation fluid dynamics. In 2003 Damian joined Gifford as a graduate engineer and over a period of 10 years gained significant experience working on a variety of projects across a range of sectors and companies including Gifford, Ramboll and forty4consulting before launching his own company.

Damian headed up building computational modelling for Gifford/Ramboll and led building sustainability for the Southampton office. His sector experience is wide ranging and includes industrial buildings, schools, offices, hospitals, museums, retail, residential, and public services based on the IES software.

Damian delivers sustainable holistic designs, looking at site characteristics, built form, renewable strategies and Part L. He has worked on a number of award winning projects including RHS Harlow Carr Visitors Centre, Ashmount Primary School, The Novium Chichester District Museum, Crawley Library, Elm Court SEN School, Victory Primary School and the Mary Rose.

Damian was one of the first CIBSE accredited L2A Assessors, presented at the CIBSE conference (2006). He is a Level 5 accredited Low Carbon Energy Assessor and can undertake EPCs on any non-domestic building in England and Wales.

He has a proven track record working within design teams, either for end clients, architects, main contractors or M&E subcontractors. He takes a holistic approach ensuring understanding of the needs of clients and the project. He aims to meet client aspirations in a practical and cost effective manner, looking at projects from multiple viewpoints to achieve the best outcomes.

Damian also has a history of working with local academic institutes (such as Solent University and the Bournemouth Arts Institute) and has lectured at Portsmouth University since 2008. He has written for publications including the Buildings magazine and the Telegraph, and has been quoted within the Architects Journal. He has presented at Sustainable Cities Portsmouth 2011 and has spoken at a number of events for organisations including RIBA, Kier, IMechE and CIBSE.

Keith Franklin
MEng (Hons) CEng MICIBSE

Keith has a solid foundation in modelling following a masters degree in mechanical engineering, with a final year focus in computational fluid dynamics. In 2003 Keith joined Stephenson and Turner as a design engineer and introduced IES to the company (the first in New Zealand) to give them advanced modern simulation software.

Following design experience in New Zealand working on a wide variety of projects, he built up to heading the mechanical design for a flagship gym. After 3 years he moved to Dubai to model the 65-storey Buidings by Daman for Burohappold before taking a break to get involved with conservation.

Keith has spent 12 years working in conservation with primates and other animals. From helping run a multi park sanctuary with volunteers to setting up a new park with only river access in Bolivia, through to developing release methods for baboons in South Africa. He kept a pace with the building services industry and specifically modelling through a design engineer role at Ramboll in the last five years and outsource work with HDSgreentech.

Sustainable design and environmental impact are core values which enable Keith to deliver benefits to clients when evaluating renewable strategies and Part L. It also helps to look for innovative natural ventilation strategies to assist in avoiding overheating.

Keith has worked on a wide variety of buildings such as Farnborough exhibition and conference centre, schools, factories, nursing homes, a skyscraper in Dubai, prisons in New Zealand as well as offices and small residential buildings.

He has worked alongside clients, architects, contractors and consultants to deliver successful projects in a number of roles, giving him a holistic view and enabling him to understand the different aspects of the design process. He is happy to go the extra mile to meet client expectations and deliver results on time and to a high level

Clare Lodwidge

Clare joined HDSgreentech in 2017, she has a creative background and a strong desire to learn. Clare came from an Administration, Accounts, Pay Role, PA environment and just before joining HDSgreentech was the Resource Co-ordinator, Lunchtime Team Leader and Librarian at a Junior School. The move to HDS was a step change but she brought with her many transferable skills, and quiet often can see things from an alternative perspective.

These include:-

• Communication
• Presentation
• Knowledge of the working school environment
• Drive to deliver to the best of her ability

Initially her key role was IES 3D geometry building and to maintain the company books. However, since joining her understanding continues to grow, always look for opportunities to learn, both within and beyond the limits of the company.

In 2020 she completed a Level 3 BTEC Diploma "e;Construction and the built Environment at City College"e; with a Distinction/Merit and “Introduction to Zero Carbon Buildings” at the University of West England. She is currently completing her NVQ apprenticeship which is due to end this summer with an End Point Assessment. Clare aspires to obtain higher level qualification, become a student member of CIBSE and gain a greater understanding across a spectrum of areas.

Since obtaining the knowledge Clare duties have expanded and now include HR, First Aid, Health & Safety, Daylighting Assessment, Thermal Modelling, L2A, Heat loss and Heat gain calculations.

Through her work and training courses undertaken at HDSgreentech, she is learning to delivering sustainable holistic designs, looking at site characteristics, built form, renewable strategies and Part L. In her relatively short career in construction industry, Clare has worked on a number of prestigious projects, including Facebook’s UK HQ, West Downs - a Teaching Facility at Winchester University and Splashdown at Butlins Bogner Regis - their flagship swimming pool.
